Pond Fish Resource

Koi fish are the domesticated variety of the common carp. In fact, the word “koi” is actually Japanese for the word “carp”. The Japanese introduced koi in the 1820s. Since then, they’ve become a popular domesticated fish. Today, due to their popularity, koi fish come in a large variety of patterns and colors like black, red, orange, yellow, silver, green and blue. Follow this link for fish koi information.

Many people like to have koi ponds in their backyards because of how relaxing they are. The soothing sound of the gently trickling water makes it easy to let go of the day. Creating visually pleasing koi ponds is almost an art form. Cultivating living plants and replicating a natural environment in the koi pond is no small task. But when someone is talented at creating the necessary synergy, the result is captivating. Some people do not realize that certain koi and plants do not live harmoniously together. Koi fish can sometimes give their owners a hard time when it comes to potted plants within the pond.

Certain plants need to live on the floor of the pond to thrive and mix well. Sometimes people are so attracted to the look of the plant and they try to grow them within the water of the pond. When you place a plant that should be rooted in the sod of the pond free and loose in the water, the koi themselves inadvertently knock the plants about. This not only muddies the water, but can create havoc in the pond environment. Koi are notorious for the digging up the soil at the bottom of the pond. You can have plants in your pond. Do not let these facts discourage your efforts to create a beautiful, serene pond. Find more koi colors info here.

There is more than one way to solve these pond issues. Netting placed strategically over the plant tops will prevent the koi from being able to dig the plants out. Another method of circumventing the digging efforts of the koi is to use pea gravel along the bottom of the pond and on the tops of the plants. If you have a really large potted plant, then river stones would be an appropriate measure. The weight of the stones will prevent the koi from being able to knock the plants over. The stones will obviously outweigh the fish themselves. The stones also keep the fish from being able to loosen the dirt underneath the plants. Thus, the plants cannot be dug up by the koi.

Lilies are a wonderful choice to place within your koi pond. Lilies are available in a wide assortment of species. Many will root in shallow water, while others will develop in much deeper water. Lilies are not a good choice when what you need oxygenation, but they do bring shade and shelter for the koi. As a bonus, lilies are attractive to look at. Plus, having plants in the water will attract insects. The insects and their larvae provide sustenance to the koi. Koi fish are meat eaters and will search through the foliage to find the tasty treats.

Koi eat other things besides insects. They have a varied diet and can be fed many different things. Many owners swear they have trained their koi to come right up to the water’s edge and eat from their hands like a pet. Koi fish have the ability to be able to recognize the person who feeds them and will approach that person during feeding time. Although you can buy koi food, koi fish also like to eat food human beings eat. They’ve been known to consume peas, watermelon and lettuce.

Those who have koi ponds truly enjoy them and visitors to their homes always comment on how pleasing the atmosphere is. They area able to add a great amount of pleasure to their owners lives and in turn are rewarded by the generosity and good care of their owners.

A Step-By-Step Directory For Teaching Your Golden Retriever

Golden retrievers have become a favorite choice among pets preferred by families today and there are a number of reasons for their popularity. This benevolent breed is lighthearted, which makes it a perfect pet for people from one to a hundred and one years old. Golden retriever training is worth your time and effort because these dogs want to please and are intelligent enough to learn. But that still doesn’t mean that training a Golden is going to be a walk in the park, there may be some bumps along the way. The following are a few tips that will help you to train a Golden Retriever puppy so that you can turn it into the perfect family pet.

Housebreaking Your Puppy:

The first lesson in your golden retriever training course will be getting your puppy to relieve himself in the proper places. Most dog owners want to train their dog to do their business outside, and you can train your dog to do this with the use of a crate. In a crate your dog has a nice, safe place to sleep and it can also help it to learn to control its bodily functions. Dogs do not generally relieve themselves in their sleeping area, so if you confine your puppy to his crate for a little while, he will learn to wait until he is taken outdoors. Once you train your puppy to go in a particular spot outside make sure to give it positive reinforcement with treats and praise.

Teeth Concerns: Proper Use of Biting and Chewing

Dogs interact with most of the world using their mouths, but you may need to train your puppy no to use its mouth when playing with family. You need to teach your puppy that it isn’t okay to nip, bite or mouth you or any family or guests. Your favorite shoe or the dog’s favorite bone may be the next target, as Golden retrievers have the habit of chewing on whatever is nearby. Dogs who are lacking in attention or who are left along for long periods of time may develop a bad chewing habit, destroying objects in your home. A good preventative measure is to buy chewable toys for your puppy. Make sure your puppy understands that your furniture and shoes are definitely off limits.

A Golden Retriever may be one of the easier breeds to train, but you still need to devote a lot of time, effort and overall: patience. High energy levels and short attention spans may plague your training sessions, even though Golden retrievers are smart and want to please you. The best recourse is to use short training sessions filled with praise and rewards. A happy pet and a very happy family for years to come will be the end result.

Alpha Dog Leader

In the wild dogs naturally live in dog packs. These dog packs have one dog that is the leader. In your home your dog considers your family to be his pack. Dogs have a natural instinct to be the pack leader. Your dog will attempt to take on the position as the pack leader, or alpha dog, if you have not assumed that role with your dog.

The alpha dog leader calls all the shots. The focus of attention for dogs in the pack is always on the alpha dog. The alpha dog is constantly defending his role as the leader of the pack. The position of alpha leader is not, usually, given up willingly.

Who is the alpha dog in your family? If it is not you, your dog will take the position on himself. An alpha dog is not always male, in a dog pack the gender does not matter. Male dogs are often the alpha leader because females, of the same breed, are usually smaller. In your household a female dog will take on the alpha dog role if the position has been left vacant. Life, within your family can be very difficult if your dog takes on the role of the alpha dog leader.

Establish yourself as an alpha leader by training your dog properly: Dog Obedience Training Guide

When your dog feels that he is the alpha dog within your family he will exhibit bad or destructive behavior. If your dog thinks he is the alpha dog he will be difficult to control and will tend to show aggressive behavior towards other dogs.

If your dog begins to think of himself as your equal it is because he is confused as to who is the alpha dog. The qualities of an alpha dog leader must be demonstrated by you at all times. The alpha qualities are displayed by voice tones, body language and an attitude of confidence. If you want your dog to accept you as the alpha dog leader you must feel comfortable in that role.

Don’t forget to check out this fantastic free website about dogs and other dog training secrets: Guide to Dog Training Secrets

It is through small deliberate acts that the alpha dog maintains his dominance. For instance, within the dog pack the alpha leader always eats first. There may be little to eat when it is finally the packs turn. The alpha dog does not go around the pack, he will show his dominance by nudging his way through the pack. Those things within the pack’s area of influence are controlled by the alpha dog.

Why is it important to understand what the alpha dog does in a dog pack? This is your family, why should you be concerned with the dog hierarchy and its functioning? The answer to that question is obvious. Being the alpha dog leader should not require force or physical or verbal abuse of any kind. You become the alpha dog leader in the eyes of your dog by imitating the practices of an alpha dog.

You can establish yourself as the alpha dog with a puppy easier than with an adult dog. It is especially difficult with an adult dog if the dog has been its own alpha dog leader. Maintaining your role as the alpha leader is something you must continually work at, even with a puppy. Being an alpha dog requires a twenty-four hour commitment.

Raising Turkeys And Chickens Together – Is It A Good Idea?

If you are raising either chickens or turkeys the next logical step would be to raise the other one as well but is that such a swell idea?

Raising turkeys and chickens together is not that good of an idea but with a little bit of maneuvering it can certainly be done.

So why is it a bad idea to raise chickens and turkeys together?

Turkey care is not quite as easy as hatching turkey eggs and watching them grow although it can be very easy. There are some things that need to be considered when raising turkeys and chickens together.

The main reason that you shouldn’t raise them together is because of diseases.  Turkeys are susceptible to life threatening diseases that chickens are immune to.  Chickens can also be a carrier to these diseases.  When you keep chickens and turkeys together you run the risk of all of your turkeys getting infected and dying. That will make it very hard for turkey breeding.

Another reason you should not consider raising turkeys and chickens together is because they require different nutrition in their diets.  If you have both in the same pen it is going to be really hard to make sure the chickens are eating the chicken food and the turkeys are eating the their food.

Without the proper nutrition in their diets you run the risk that both your turkeys and chickens are going to have health problems.

The third reason is that chickens and turkeys do not have the same type of personality so you could get into trouble if they decide not to get along.

So how do you actually go about raising turkeys and chickens together?

If you have a large enough yard and would really like to raise both of them then you need to make sure that they both have their own separate spots.  Make sure that their pens are not right up against each other because that is to close and disease can spread across the fence.

By keeping them in their own seperate spots you can have the benefits of raising both chickens and turkeys without having to worry about them harming each other.

Your Cockatiel’s Physique And How It Works

Cockatiels are hardy birds and barely get sick. Even if they do, it can generally be difficult to tell, as they proceed to behave normally. But with a little bit education, early detection and excellent care, the odds for restoration are great.

The cockatiel’s body is similar to any mammals body. Cockatiels and mammals each have skin, skeletons, respiratory, digestive, cardiovascular, excretory and nervous systems, in addition to sensory organs. Allow us to take a short take a look at how these systems work together.

The cockatiel’s skin is tough to see underneath all the feathers, but should you part the feathers gently, you will notice a skinny almost translucent skin beneath. Birds haven’t got sweat glands, in order that they have to cool themselves off by holding their wings slightly open and holding the beak open. Make sure that by no means to depart your cockatiel in the heat of the solar, as they can overheat very quickly, and if he will get heat stroke will require veterinary care.

Birds are the one animals which have feathers. Feathers serve many purposes. They help birds to fly, keep them heat, appeal to the attention of potential mates, and birds also use their feathers to scare away predators. A cockatiel has between 5 000 and 6 000 feathers on its body. Cockatiels have several types of feathers – contour feathers, down feathers, semi plume feathers and flight feathers. Cockatiels maintain their feathers looking good by spending quite a lot of time fluffing themselves out and preening. In case you cockatiel appears to be like as if she is choosing on the bottom of his feathers, he is really eradicating oil from the preen gland and spreading it down his feathers.

Birds have bones, but do you know that some fowl bones are hollow. This aids in making the chicken lighter to enable it to fly. Cockatiels also have air sacks in some of their bones for extra buoyancy in flight. Parrots also have ten neck vertebrae in comparison to a humans seven. This allows a parrot to turn its head 180 degrees. This enables cockatiels to spot meals or predators in the wild.

The cockatiel has a very efficient respiratory and cardiovascular system. The cockatiels digestive system could be very effective in making gasoline from it’s food. The cockatiel’s physique temperature is increased than a humans. It’s digestion begins with a highly efficient beak that breaks down robust seeds like little nut crackers. A cockatiel doesn’t have saliva to interrupt down the food as we do and the vast majority of the digestive juices are found in its crop. In contrast to mammals birds would not have a bladder or urethra.

The cockatiel’s sense of style isn’t good, they usually style food on the roof of their mouths and never on the tongues. Cockatiels have wonderful vision and see color. They can not rotate their eyes, but do have necks that assist to present them all round vision. The sense of hearing is sweet, but they can not hear very excessive or very low pitched tones in addition to people do. A cockatiel’s sense of scent just isn’t effectively developed, however they’ve a good sense of touch using their beaks and toes for this purpose.
