Things You Should Remember When Choosing A Cage For Your Pet Bird

Bird cages come in different models and sizes. The general rule when buying it, that  should always be a lot bigger than your pet bird.  Keeping your pet bird in a small cage is bad because it often leads to undesirable behavior like biting, feather plucking, screaming and certain psychological disorders.

The ideal bird-cage should allow the bird walk around comfortably and fully extend or flap their wings. Give also some consideration when you also put food inside, water and toys since these also take up some space of the cage.

Bird cages are very open since there is bar spacing all around. Pay attention to the spacing in the bird cage because if it is too wide, your bird may squeeze and escape through the bars.

For owners who have small birds, spacing should not be more than half an inch apart. If you have a big bird, see if you can get a cage that has bars not only vertically but horizontally as well. While inspecting the different bird cages, check the latch or the lock which keeps it closed. Can this be easily opened by the bird? Believe it or not, some birds can opend the door,  so be sure that this can’t happen.

As you probably already know, bird cages also come in different shapes. When you are shopping for it, try to get angled cages instead of round ones as some studies have shown round cages are not good for the health of the bird. You should not worry when you decide to get an angled cage because these can still be hung or placed on a stand.

Another thing to consider when shopping for bird cages is if this can easily be cleaned. Yes this has to be cleaned and washed especially when the bird droppings accumulate so you should not have any problems removing and returning it.

Whenever you go shopping, you want value for your money and the same goes when you are buying a bird cage. It should be made of superior quality and solid.  If the material used is metal, naturally it must be stainless steel which is easy for you to clean and non-toxic.

The last thing you have to consider when choosing a cage for your pet bird is where you will be putting it once you bring it home.  The ideal spot should be spacious and far away from drafts and windows.

The very last thing you have to consider when choosing a cage for your pet bird is where you will be putting it when you bring it home. The perfect spot should be spacious and far away from drafts and windows. If you are working, make sure that there are a few things inside the cage to keep it entertained by buying the bird some accessories, perches and toys.

While some birds can stay in the cage the whole day, find time to bring it home every so often so it can fly around the house and get a little workout. Just be sure that the windows and doors are closed when you decide to do it otherwise this could fly out and you will never see your bird again.

Cat eye health is sometimes hard to determine, but if you look for the right signs, you can determine if your cat needs medical help to prevent more complications that are serious. The fluorescein stain tests for ulcers of the corneal; the schirmer tear test measures the tear production level and the ocular pressure test to check for glaucoma.

Cat Eye Health and Conjunctivitis

Bacterial infections, viral infections and fungus infections may cause this type of cat eye health problems in cats of all ages. Herpes viral infection also causes conjunctivitis and cats normally need medical treatment. The cat eye health is always important as they could lose their sight if proper treatment is not received. This eye problem also has the same symptoms as conjunctivitis such as a weeping or tearing of the eye.

Treatments of Glaucoma and Cataract

Surgery will remove the cataract before it becomes a cat eye health and causes the cat to lose their sight. Whether the eye problem is for infection or any other health problems, your veterinarian will recommend the best treatment available for your cat.

The Love of a Pet Owner

By Sara Kim

You’ve received the forwarded e-mails, I’m sure. The ones with the adorable and funny animal pictures – the cat flushing the toilet, the dog wearing sunglasses and the bird wearing mother’s jewels. There is no doubt that we are entertained by such lovable furry creatures, but why is this?
Perhaps it is because even the best-trained of our pets are like children – spontaneous in their actions and always ready to give love to the person who needs it. These are the reasons that children and pets alike endear themselves to us.

Key Cat

Key Cat

We live in a dog-eat-dog world, if you would please forgive the pun! The daily stresses of finances, a commute, family tensions and political turmoil do much to cause anxiety. This is why we are so happy when a mundane day is broken up with episodes of lightness and humor – often provided by animals!

Pets are known to bring comfort to their owners – young and old – and have even been heroes in instances where a rescue was necessary. Haven’t you heard of Spot, the Dalmatian who smelled smoke and ran out into the street, barking until someone came to help his unconscious owner? What about fluffy, the Himalayan who recognized a rodent-like creature creeping towards her owner’s crib and promptly killed it, saving the baby? It is easy to understand our fascination with animals.

People treat their pets better than ever before and both brick-and-mortar and online stores are stocked full of toys, accessories and treats for these animals. Many owners will spare no cost when purchasing a bed for Muffin or a collar for Duke. In fact, pets are now included in a family sitting for their annual photo. Dogs and cats are sent to obedience schools and day care – often at the same cost one might spend on private school tuition for their human children.

This is no joke and the individuals who feel this way about their pets will be the first to tell you so! An especially hard time for these families is when Rover or Socks passes away, leaving behind only memories and perhaps a few catnip toys hidden behind the couch in the res room. A full-blown funeral ceremony may be necessary – much more than the under-tree burial of olden days. Support of family and friends can help during the grieving process along with a few kind words remembering a fond experience with Mitzy or Bangles.

Still, if you are not a pet owner yourself, you may still find pleasure in having funny animal pictures adorn your home – a friendly face and conversation piece without the super-duper pooper scooper and midnight barking at the moon.

Cat Names

Cat Names .. And How to Find Them

By Marcus De Jong

Cute cat names? Max is popular, Lady a favorite for queens. If you want your cat to have a more original name, you have to use your imagination. Or get some expert help.

Cute Cat

Cute Cat

‘Muffin. Kitty. Snowball. All stupid names that no self respecting cat would have – if it weren’t for the stupid human who gave it to him!’

These lines come from the hilarious, but now sold out Garfield Book of Cat Names by Jim Davis. The famous cartoon cat is a self declared enemy of silly names. In the book he gives advice on how to give your kitten a name to be proud of.

Popular tom cat names are Max, Sam, Charlie, Buddy, Toby, Rocky, Buster, Casey.

Popular cat names for females are Lady, Kitty, Chelsea, Molly, Maggie, Sadie, Abby, Dakota, Sasha.

There are also names that are just right for males and females, like Shadow or Smokey.

Although some people think cats ignore them when called, cats do listen – and very well. If you say its name often and clear it will soon recognize it. And if you consequently call your kitten’s name, it will associate the sound with food, play and other pleasant activities.

If your kitten comes from a planned mating between pedigree animals, you need to register the name. There are strict rules for this. Professional cat breeders are happy to tell you more.

Still, finding the right and preferably cute name is not easy.

Your family members will want to agree with it, and of course it should not sound silly once your cute little kitten becomes an adult cat.

Colors often give inspiration, or the coat. During the Clinton administration almost every American knew Socks, the First Cat of the United States, and it’s not difficult to understand why Clinton’s cat got this name.

A cat’s personality may also give a hint for a good name. This works best with older cats that you took from a shelter, because they usually have a clearly developed personality.

Celebrity names are also a good bet. There are cats that are called Elvis Presley or Marilyn (after Monroe). Best advice: choose a timeless celebrity. This week’s Top-20 star may be forgotten tomorrow. But your cat certainly won’t.

Suggestions cat names from Jennifer Manning

Is your cat brown? Here are some suggestions — Brownie, Eartha, Clay, Coffee, Java, Sienna, Bear, Cub

I know that I haven’t covered all types of cats that people have, but hopefully I’ve given you at least a little inspiration in your journey for the perfect cat name.

Your New Cat: Why Are the First 24 Hours So Important? Part-3

Summarizing from article wrote By John Young

The author of the E-book: “Your New Cat’s First 24 Hours”

FIVE THINGS YOU MUST CONSIDER BEFORE ADOPTING A CAT.

In Parts 1 and 2 of this series we considered the vital need to prepare your house for your cat, make sure her medical needs are met, and that you yourself are ready for the adoption of a feline — an independent animal that doesn’t respond to teaching and training the way a dog would.

• Time

A cat needs time spent with her. One of the big mistakes busy people make is to fail to realize that they have crazy schedules that don’t allow them to spend enough time with their newly adopted cat.

This could ultimately result in your cat running off. If you have no time to spend with your cat, she will not choose your house as “her den”. She will go searching for another one, and you could be soon reporting a “lost cat”.

• Money

New Cat Dog

New Cat Dog

A lot of people don’t count the cost of pet ownership. Many people shun pet medical insurance, not realizing that the same things that happen to people happen to cats, and can cost large sums of money to cure.

• Knowledge of Your Cat’s Medical Needs

Some people who adopt strays or cats owned by friends don’t realize the full extent of the medical attention their new cat may need:

– A complete vaccination regimen

– Spaying or neutering

In particular, that cute kitten you brought home from a friend’s litter will need a long series of vaccinations (along with boosters) that will extend over a period of a couple of years. I made it an outdoor cat, and it died of feline leukemia.

• Knowledge of Your Cat’s Physical Needs

When your cat climbs out of the carrier box for the first time, will you be equipped with the essentials?

Or, will you discover that you need these things later…and bring them in one at a time, after your cat has defecated in the corner, started clawing the furniture, or begun some other unauthorized behavior you are not prepared for? Making sure you have on hand what you need to receive your new cat is vital.

• Your Home Prepared.

You must be certain your home and your house occupants are prepared for the arrival of your new kitty.

FIRST INTRODUCTIONS

Your technique for doing that can be a deciding factor in whether or not your cat adapts to your home immediately, by the next day or the next month, or flees the house altogether.

Do you know about allergies, special foods, bathing, grooming, hair balls, removing urine, training and teaching without frightening and alienating her, and a multitude of other situations cat owners wrestle with on a daily basis? Do you know the hazards involved in letting her become an outdoor cat?

KNOW WHAT TO DO

As you’ve often heard, ‘preparation is the key to success’, and nowhere does that apply more appropriately than to cat ownership.

I say probably because every cat is different. Even with the best preparation by a knowledgeable owner, a cat may still want to hide for awhile. And if you discover that’s the case…
